Why aren't all fashion brands using sustainable fabrics?

"And you are absolutely sure that you are able to source affordable sustainable fabrics?" one of our Directors asked me again. For the 10th time.  We were at the very beginning of our VILDNIS journey and I was presenting my vision to my fellow three company Directors. They all loved the idea of a sustainable fashion brand, and were now scrutinising the plan to decide whether the proposal was viable or not.  Having assured them that I could definitely source all the sustainable fabrics and materials needed for the collection, I was met with another question; "but if sustainable fabrics are widely available and affordable, then why aren't all fashion brands using them?" It is a very good question!  There have, of course, been obstacles on the fabric sourcing...

Is cotton good for you and the planet?

We all want to make the best possible choices in our daily lives, but do you also find it difficult sometimes to know what the best option is? Cotton is one of the most popular fibres in the textile industry, providing jobs for millions of people across the world. Plucked directly from the cotton plant and being processed mechanically, it is as natural as it comes. Before we know it, something that used to delight us has become the norm, and our favourite brands have to come up with something even more spectacular. It is a vicious circle. Every day we throw out huge amounts of...

Palm trees, sea, sand and ... plastic

Imagine being on a long stretch of white sandy beach. The sun is scorching and with the palm trees offering little shade in the mid day sun, you decide to go for a swim in the turquoise sea to cool off. The water is clear and you dive under to take a look at the colourful fish. When your head emerges from the water again, a plastic bag has positioned itself nicely on top of it...  Ever tried this? Me neither, fortunately! I have, however, come across quite a few exotic beaches full of plastic. A few years ago in Borneo, I wanted to spend the night at an 'out-of-this-world' hotel on stilts at a small exotic island. However, while reading reviews of the...

Costa Rica - the inspiration for our first collection

Which country is your favourite travel destination in the world?  With a planet so abundant with stunningly beautiful places, it can be difficult to pinpoint which one is your favourite. Still, there is one destination that has a special place in my heart, Costa Rica, and this is where we found inspiration for our first collection.   Costa Rica has everything we love: wild and unspoiled bounty beaches, lush green rain forests, breath-taking volcanoes, some of the world’s best surf spots, and the greatest density of species in the world. Oh, to sit on a Costa Rican beach just now soaking up the sun and watching the waves roll in... Anyway, back to Costa Rica and the reason why we find...
